RAMP stands for Risk Assessment and management tool for Manual handling Proactively, and is a tool for systematically assessing and managing the risks of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in jobs that include manual handling, such as lifting work and assembly.

The RAMP tool provides support for the entire chain from the identification and management of risks to the development of action proposals, a clear action plan and its follow-up, and is the result of a multi-year research project at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), sponsored by, among other, AFA Insurance.

Why has Movomech chosen to use RAMP?

– We develop and manufacture lifting aids for the industry, as different types of lifting manipulators and end effectors, and a given part of this process is that we apply regulations and standards in the field of ergonomics, says Martin Olsson, Quality and Environment Manager at Movomech.

– There are many different ergonomic assessment tools, but in our opinion RAMP is the most complete and best structured for the type of work processes we come into contact with.

Movomech now uses several modules of the RAMP tool both within the framework of customer projects and in the development of new lifting manipulators.

– Using a clear and structured tool for the assessment of a manual work process is important, continues Martin. Partly because a risk assessment must be done in the same way regardless of who does it, but also because it is not enough to only assess how much a lifting object weighs and how far out of the body it is held to get an idea of the handling is risky and can cause strain injuries.

– There are many other important factors that must be included in the assessment in order to be able to compare alternative handling solutions with each other, as well as to determine which measures should be prioritized.

– We also have customers who use RAMP as an ergonomic risk assessment tool. It facilitates in our communication that we use the same assessment criteria and measurement methods. The fact that Movomech’s responsible for ergonomics also received a professional certificate in the application of the RAMP tools through extensive training shows that we have full competence to use the assessment tool in its entirety. That, we are proud of.
